Humanitarian, by Design? Le design au cœur de l’humanitaire explores the objects commonly used in humanitarian action – such as first-aid kits, tents, prostheses, maps and makeshift shelters – and asks what they reveal about the lives of those who rely on them. The exhibition examines how design – whether improvised, institutional or repurposed – shapes life in situations of crisis, displacement or extreme precarity. From hacked plastics to architectures of waiting, and from personal stories to crisis imagery, it sheds light on fragile and often invisible practices designed for purposes of endurance, resistance, and hope.
The exhibition was developed through a collaboration between the Geneva Graduate Institute, HEAD – Genève, the University of Copenhagen, the EPFL EssentialTech Centre, and the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Museum. It invites us to rethink humanitarian design from the perspective of those who live it – and to reflect on how humanitarian action concerns us all, here and now.

Le Plaza Steps Through the Screen is an original mixed-reality work that invites the public to pass through a series of virtual portals set out across 300 square metres, stepping into iconic sequences from the history of cinema.
The piece is the outcome of two years of research into an innovative digital process, Gaussian Splatting, which carefully turns images or filmed sequences into navigable three-dimensional environments with a fluid, realistic rendering. Unlike conventional 3D, this approach rebuilds space from millions of visual points (clouds of particles), each carrying information on colour, depth and transparency.
As the Plaza Centre Cinéma prepares to reopen, the work questions the future of cinema in the digital age: how we consume it, how the medium is changing, and the place of the body in the cinematic experience.

Points of Home turns a phone into a tool for documenting built space in humanitarian crises. From an ordinary video, the application produces three-dimensional models and point clouds that translate into architectural plans: rooms, materials, circulations, traces of daily life.
In informal settlements and displacement, homes often go undocumented. Points of Home starts from the inside: communities record their own spaces and produce data that help them understand, claim and even legalise the places they inhabit. The application was tested in Bukavu, DR Congo, and in La Guajira, Colombia, in 2025, as the core of two field workshops.

Fragments of the Subterranean is an audiovisual piece that brings two subterranean protagonists, a bunker and a river together. No.1: Bunkers Bunkers have traditionally played an important role in ideologically and materially preserving and embodying the ‘neutral’ social and political identity of Switzerland. In addition to an extensive network of fortifications most evident in the estimated 8000 military bunkers spread throughout Switzerland, the rise of Cold War nuclear tension led to the construction of 370,000 nuclear shelters (abris de protection – abris PC – shelters) to secure every household in the country. While today some of these bunkers have been sold to private entrepreneurs for facilities such as hotels, museums, or mushroom farms, they have also been mobilized by the Swiss state to “host” asylum seekers. In 2005, the Housing Commission of Geneva’s ‘Grand Council’ investigated the ways in which asylum seekers were being housed in these nuclear bunkers. After interviewing social workers and asylum seekers – mainly from Kosovo – they concluded that past traumas (from torture, imprisonment, war and more) were exacerbated by the stress of living in these underground bunkers, especially for indefinite periods, as well as leading to a loss of day-night reality. Yet, in early 2024, two underground civil protection bunkers were reopened in order to house asylum seekers, despite having been closed six years earlier following a “Stop Bunkers” campaign. No.2: The Drize River The Drize River is an underground river that flows from France to Switzerland. In early 2024, construction work began to bring 450 meters of the Drize River to the surface: the first stage of a major river ‘renaturation’ project. Since the start of the project, articles have flooded the news with statements about how the river will bring fresh air, support biodiversity, and encourage interaction between local residents.

METASAULES is an original and innovative project digitising an industrial building emblematic of Geneva's urban landscape, converted since 2017 by the Geneva cooperative Ressources Urbaines into an artistic, social and cultural centre. The 3D-scanner digitisation of 3 sentier des Saules, the former Stern Frères watch-dial factory, is an initiative to preserve an unprecedented three-dimensional replica of a unique place of creation. This pioneering approach to architectural heritage and cultural mediation has also made it possible to archive the constellation of artistic practices hosted there in recent years. Before the building's imminent demolition, several mixed-reality experiences open to the public will allow visitors to explore the interior spaces of this cultural and artistic hive, while discovering new underlying perspectives, such as the virtual exhibition of a selection of artworks produced by its occupants.

The establishment of the Diallo Sita Library, in Tengrela, Ivory Coast, is a response to the rigid development of suburban areas in the country. Beyond providing the neighbourhood with a library managed by local actors, the project participates in the definition of public space too often neglected. The project has been developed through numerous exchanges with future users. Particular attention to the use of colours contrasts with the ordinary materials.
The operating costs are covered by the presence of a teacher's housing. Inaugurated in January 2022, the library allows a network of professors, the association Jade, to offer academic support as well as many civic activities.
